Are Pure SOA-based Systems Viable?

I have just come from Newport Beach, CA, where I presented my paper on Creating Web Services From GUI-based Applications at the IEEE SOCA. A sentiment that has been repeated by many conference participants is that pure SOA-based systems are not viable. It is my observation that main supportes of this view come from industry, specifically from large companies. They participated in various projects, tried to build large-scale SOA-based systems, and based on this experience they came to the thought of impracticality of pure SOA-based systems.

A main idea behind this view is that different organizational and legal limitations make it difficult to find any projects which can be based on pure SOAs. In addition to technical difficulties of composing systems automatically from the descriptions of their SOAs, conference participants strongly expressed a point that they should be able to incorporate legacy applications into SOA-based systems. Building hybrid systems that are part SOA and part legacy-based is difficult. I recommend to read industry reports, especially the experience report by Richard Hirsch on Use of SAP NetWeaver Technology to realize SOA-based BPM Tasks.
